Family Vacation Safety: 5 Essential Tips for your Next Trip

Staying safe on vacation can be a concern for many travelers.  You may be concerned about traveling to a new destination, traveling solo, or bringing your little travelers along for the fist time.  Keep reading to find out my top 5 things to do to stay safe on your next vacation!

1. Make copies of documents and leave them at home with a trusted friend.
This is a well-known safety tip.  Make paper copies of or email your travel documents to a family member or friend. This can include your passport, drivers license, travel insurance documents, airport itinerary, and resort confirmation information.  Try to keep in touch with this person while on your vacation as well.

2. Prep your kids before the trip and tell them what to do in an emergency.
This is something you should do in everyday life anyways, and it can be even more important when you are traveling.  No matter your kids age, try to do something to prepare them for an emergency.  If they are really young, teach them a phrase to say or yell if they are lost or uncomfortable.  You can also show them who can help them (for example, if you are in Walt Disney World, show them who the cast members are).  I've seen some parents use temporary tattoos with the child's name and the parents contact information as well.

3. Don't overindulge.
This is super important at an all inclusive resort OR on a cruise - and really applicable in any destination.  Do. Not. Overindulge. When. Drinking.  I know you are on vacation to have fun and unwind, but it is still important to stay aware of your surroundings.  Along with this - don't let others in your travel party overindulge, look out for each other and keep each other safe.

4. Don't leave each other behind.
Obviously if you are traveling as a family with little kids, this one is pretty obvious - I am more advising adults traveling together.  Don't leave each other behind - try to stick together as best as you can, especially if you are out of the country. If you do need to separate, make a plan for when and where you will meet back up.

5. Book transfers, excursions, and accommodations with a reputable company through your travel advisor.
When you decide to take a vacation and google your next destination, you will be overwhelmed with the number of options.  Work with a travel advisor who has trusted travel partners to plan your next trip.  These travel partners are all vetted and reliable - we can trust the destination you are going to and we know our travel partner will be there to support you in the event of an emergency.
